Eye & Face Aesthetics

Did you know that treating dry eye disease can also improve the appearance of your skin?

The same equipment and procedures that are used to treat facial inflammation that causes dry eye disease are also used by medical aesthetic clinics to remove cosmetic abnormalities such as erythema (redness of the face), hemangiomas (red spots on your face), spider veins, brown aging spots, and those unwanted facial wrinkles.

The doctors and staff at Eye Care & Eye Wear Center of Maine specialize in treating dry eye disease. As eye doctors, we understand the anatomy and physiology of the eyes and surrounding facial structures. Our procedures and treatments can safely and effectively treat dry eye disease. Using IPL (intense pulsed light) and TriPollar radiofrequency to treat the skin of your face reduces or prevents MGD dry eye disease. These devices also improve cosmetic facial abnormalities. Please ask our eye doctors if these treatments are right for you.

What effects do IPL and TriPollar have on the skin of my face?

Dry eye treatments using IPL and TriPollar radiofrequency improve MGD (meibomian gland dysfunction – the most prevalent type of dry eye disease) and improve cosmetic imperfections on your face. Treating facial rosacea, which is the primary underlying cause of MGD, also improves erythema (facial redness), spider veins and other red spots. Brown aging spots are also reduced with IPL dry eye treatments. In fact, you cannot treat dry eye disease with these devices without also causing improvement in cosmetic conditions. Simply stated, IPL and TriPollar radiofrequency improve and restore your skin to a healthier more youthful condition. The same abnormalities that cause MGD dry eye disease also cause many of these unwanted cosmetic abnormalities. Healthier skin means healthier eye lid glands which means less dry eye.

IPL and Tripollar dry eye treatments also have aesthetic benefits.

Are IPL and TriPollar safe?

IPL Treatments – Lumenis M22

IPL (intense pulsed light) uses pulses of non-coherent light of specific wavelengths and energy that penetrate through your skin, creating heat and targeting skin imperfections in a controlled way. Your body’s natural healing process then removes the treated imperfections. IPL targets hemoglobin (red spots and spider veins) that are associated with ocular and facial rosacea and melanin (freckles & brown spots). IPL treatments significantly reduce the inflammation that is the the major cause of dry eye disease, and can also leave your skin looking smoother and younger.

TriPollar – Legend Pro by Lumenis

TriPollar radiofrequency treats MGD dry eye disease by heating and removing the obstructions of thickened oil (meibum) in the meibomian glands of your eyelids. This treatment promotes normal function of the eyelid oil secreting glands. TriPollar also reduces facial rosacea, a major cause of inflammatory dry eye disease, stimulates collagen rejuvenation in the deeper layers of your skin and shrinks underlying fat cells. This can reduce loose flabby skin and associated larger wrinkles.

Dark under-eye circles and bags are caused by oxidation of hemoglobin in the peri-orbital area and by liquid and fat retention in this area. Hemoglobin degradation creates pigmentation which causes the dark color under your eyelids. Liquid and fat retention cause sagging of the skin in this area which creates puffiness under the lower eyelids. TriPollar radiofrequency stimulates collagen regeneration and shrinks fat cells in this area to reduce these unsightly under-eye circles and bags.

Latisse

Latisse is a prescription eye drop that stimulates your eyelashes to grow longer and darker. Used daily, results are usually noticed after the first month.

Eyedrops

Lumify

Lumify is a non-prescription eye drop that whitens your eyes. While this may reduce the redness on the white part of your eyes it does not address the underlying cause of eye redness. Often redness is caused by chronic dry eye disease or allergy. The doctors at Eye Care & Eye Wear Center of Maine can correctly diagnose the cause of chronic red eyes and offer a more permanent solution to chronic red eyes.
